Rebuild bombed out school in Rio Frio, El Salvador

This building may not look promising to us in our prosperous country. But in reality, this is a beautiful beginning to a new school.

This brick building is a former school which was bombed during the civil war between the guerillas and the government forces. This structure is on land owned by the Ministry of Education. This village has two certified teachers who have been teaching in old decrepit sheds (see below). It also has a nutritional food supplement program, which guarantees every child food to start the day with, as well as basic educational supplies.

CAFRED and June Fedorchuk (We Plant the Seeds) took on this project because they know it will be affordable. The part that is standing is very solid. They will need to provide the supplies for reinforcements, windows, the floor and a roof.

They would like to see the rebuilt school expanded to accommodate a minimum of 75 students (at present there are 45 children attending), mainly because there is no room to accommodate any more.

This borrowed farm shed has been used as a replacement classroom (for the past 15 years). With a new school, the children will receive new desks and other relevant supplies from the Ministry of Education.

To keep cost to a minimum, the mothers and fathers of the village provide manual labour under the supervision of the contractor and his workers. The mayor of the municipality has the responsibility of clearing the land and providing a well-built fence and gate to protect the school and students from animals roaming around, potential vandalism, and for cleanliness.

The ministry of education has already committed to providing teachers, food supplements, supplies and desks.

This is the inside of a typical home in Rio Frio. This is also the life that this young girl will be subjected too, without education. She is grinding corn and making tortillas, the main staple in their diet. The large jugs are used to carry water from a very long distance to use in their homes.

June says, "My main goal in building schools in these countries is because l may not be able to do a lot, but if l can change the life of one child for the better, and have that child go on to become a teacher, nurse, mechanic with a better life, then l will have changed the life of that child's family. They will go on to a life of hope and independence; they will be peasants no more."
