get fresh! gives back

Shireen volunteers her time helping two charitable organizations who build schools and implement educational programs in Central America.

  • We Plant the Seeds, founded by Shireen's friend, White Rock resident June Fedorchuk.
  • CAFRED (Central America Foundation for Rural Education Development), founded by Shireen's friend Gary Urra of Washington, DC.

Shireen recently formed the Angel Foundation in order to raise money for worthy causes. It's a 'giving circle of angels', who together can raise enough money to make a real difference.

How it started

When Shireen was a child, she used to dream of bringing food to the underprivileged in developing countries. She had no idea how she would manage this; she just felt it was something she was meant to do.

Shireen had the good fortune of becoming friends with June Fedorchuk (White Rock, BC), who introduced her to Gary and Eduardo Urra (Washington DC). These three wonderful people are in the process of changing the face of rural Central America, one village at a time.

It is through their organizations that Shireen has been able to fulfill her dream. She's now able to do much more than bring food to those in need. She's supporting a movement which is helping impoverished villages become educated and self-sufficient.

June Fedorchuk went to Guatemala to volunteer at an orphanage. This lead to her discovery of the small village of Caserio San Francisco. This village of 800 shared one outhouse. The children attended school in a dilapidated palapa-style hut and sat on a dirt at a bench to learn, with no books or paper. Struck by such realities, June set out to make a difference.

Because of June, these children now have a real school to attend, and books and things they've never owned, such as shoes and backpacks. June has since founded We Plant the Seeds and is helping the villagers become self-sufficient. (See the Guatemala Times for more...)

Gary and Eduardo Urra were inspired by what they saw while travelling through Canton Remirez, El Salvador. "Ravaged by war, gangs and earthquakes, the only schoolhouse suffered from a rusted roof, tree roots growing through holes in the floor, the wood eaten by termites, no school desks or security of any kind."

This moving sight lead to the founding of the Central America Foundation for Rural Education Development (full story on the CAFRED website...).
